"The Power of Words"

Dear follower,
"It all begins with a story..."
That's how actor, Morgan Freeman described the powerful effect of a leader who puts everything on the line to stand up for human rights. He joined us in spotlighting December as Human Rights Month on YouTube.
Today, we're premiering our video homage to you – the supporters who help spread human rights stories far and wide. You use your words to make real change happen and in our new video, you can see the incredible effect that your actions have.
Watch our new video "The Power of Words" and tell a friend (or five) about it. We're aiming to get the whole YouTube community talking about justice, fairness and human rights. But we need your help to kick off the conversation.
Please join us in celebrating the words that make our fight to protect human rights stronger.
Best wishes,
All of us at Amnesty International USA

"The Price of Silence"

Today marks the 60th anniversary of the first blueprint for global rights. Watch the new music video "The Price of Silence" and take action to fulfill the promise of the Universal Declaration of Human

A music video that brings together 16 of the worlds top musicians—some of whom have fled oppressive regimes—in a rousing musical plea to guarantee human rights for all. The track, donated by Aterciopelados and arranged by fusion music guru Andres Levin, combines the voices of Hugh Masekela, Julieta Venegas, Stephen Marley, Angelique Kidjo, Yungchen Lhamo, Aterciopelados, Yerba Buena, Natacha Atlas, Rachid Taha, Kiran Ahluwalia, Chiwoniso and Emmanual Jal with those of U.S. artists Natalie Merchant, and Chali 2Na of Jurassic 5. Introduction by Laurence Fishburne.
60 years ago this very day - after the horrors of World War II - the world came together at the United Nations to unanimously pass the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
This powerful declaration says that every human being deserves dignity, freedom and respect. It's the first blueprint for global rights, establishing fundamental freedoms for every human being.
The UDHR set in motion a global movement that literally opened prison doors, shut down torture and execution chambers, and caused the downfall of the worst tyrannies.
60 years later, despite much progress, millions are still denied basic human rights. Many governments still show more interest in abusing power than respecting those they lead. For far too many, injustice, inequality and impunity are still the hallmarks of our world today. [i]
But hope exists. Grassroots actions like those that catapulted Barack Obama to office, are the same that put abusive nations on notice.
